California OES

California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) teamed up with a firm I designed for called 4Leaf LLC. CalOES is responsible as a liaison between FEMA providing money, workers, and supplies for local California residents devastated by disasters such as wildfire and earthquakes. My responsibility was to design Salesforce solutions for people in need throughout California. Projects include a portal webpage for people seeking Public Assistance and people filling out Resource Request Forms. Another responsibility was designing the marketing material for 4Leaf in order to gain business with other California government agencies.

4LEAF MARKETING MATERIALS

Part of designing for 4Leaf was showing how the design process worked for both CalOES and prospective clients.

USER RESEARCH

A major part of designing for CalOES was user research. We had multiple extensive meetings with both members of CalOES and local jurisdictions throughout California. Interviews were archived on a software called Grain. We also kept organized notes on feedback and how to implement said feedback into wireframes and mockups. Designs were then presented through clickable Figma pages for user feedback. We also allowed our users to leave digital sticky notes directly on design pages.

PUBLIC ASSISTANCE PORTAL

I designed a central hub page where local jurisdictions could keep track of money orders they sent to FEMA for grant receivals. Through multiple user interviews, I designed many different features that could fulfill the needs of what a diverse set of people wanted to see in their own personalized portal page.

RESOURCE REQUEST MOCKUPS

Another substantial project was Resource Request: a robust form for requesting disaster relief supplies/personnel such as generators and flashlights. This page required a lot of user research, research analysis, a feedback matrix, and dozens of web design alternatives to fulfill all the different feature requests. Some data is blurred for confidentiality reasons.

RESULTS

For the most part, CalOES and local jurisdictions were extremely onboard with using Salesforce as a central hub for all their data and necessary features. Convincing large complex government entities to adapt to new software is always a challenge so it takes a lot of convincing and good mockups! All of these features are in different cycles of development and will soon aid and expedite the process of helping those in need when disaster strikes.
